15 Tips For Maintaining Healthy Skin

By: Tanya Harris

Achieving a perfect complexion is an essential component of our lives, and it’s not always easy to find the right products or routine that work for you. Fortunately, there are some basic tips to help with this task; use these if you’re on your own skincare journey!

#1 Drink plenty of water

The human body is a complex machine. It needs lots of fluids to function properly, and the skin is no exception. If you’re dehydrated, your skin won’t be able to maintain its elasticity the way it should — dryness and flakiness will become a problem.

#2 Get enough sleep

Sleeping does more than give you rest from a long day — it’s when your body heals itself. Sleep deprivation is linked to skin issues such as ace, eczema and psoriasis. Missing out on an hour or two of shut-eye not only makes these conditions worse; it can also cause dark circles under the eyes.

#3 Deep Cleanse and tone

If you don’t wash your face, dirt and other grime from the day gets trapped in your pores. And even if you take off your makeup before you jump into bed at night, that doesn’t mean it’s clean — some makeup can still accumulate throughout the day. Make sure you follow up with toner. You can also use a facial scrubber.

#4 Find the right moisturiser for your skin type and never skimp on SPF

Moisturising is one of the most important keys to healthy skin. If you find that lotion dries out your already-dry hands or makes your skin oily, try a gel instead, it’s lighter than lotion and has smaller molecules that can penetrate deeper into the skin.

#5 Moisturise your skin at night

Moisturising at night is a great way to prepare your skin for the following day. If you do it properly, you’ll wake up with supple, dewy skin that looks as good as it did when you were in your 20s.

#6 Don’t forget your neck

You may be tempted to skip moisturising this sensitive area, but don’t do it! It’s critical for keeping wrinkles away. When you’re searching for the right moisturiser, check out one with broad spectrum SPF — it’ll protect your skin from damaging rays and harmful pollutants.

#7 Stay away from harsh soaps

When washing your face, be sure to steer clear of anything that can irritate the skin or strip it of its natural oils. If your face feels tight after washing your face or taking a shower, try switching to milder products that won’t be harsh on your skin.

#8 Lock in moisture with serum

They’re packed with active ingredients which can make your skin look and feel younger for longer, so you’ll get the most out of this important step in your skincare routine.

#9 Don’t forget to exfoliate

Just as you protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays by applying sunscreen every day, you can protect your skin from dryness, acne and blackheads by exfoliating. This means scrubbing the dead skin away, so it doesn’t act as a barrier to your skincare products.

#10 Don’t swap out cleansers for other products

If you’ve always used facial soap, don’t suddenly switch over to lotion later on. Your skin is built to handle certain products; don’t put it through a radical change by using something new. Instead, supplement your regular skincare regimen with an extra product (e.g., eye cream or cleansers) — that way, you can target different areas of the face without upsetting the overall balance of your normal routine.

#11 Don’t forget your hands

If you wash your face at night and then go to bed without washing your hands, lots of skin-damaging particles can be transferred from your hands to the pillowcase. If possible, always use a cleanser after washing up before you hit the hay. It might seem like a minor task but with so many natural pollutants lingering both inside and outside, it’s important to stay vigilant about washing.

#12 Use sunscreen year-round

Even if you live in a place where winter days are sunny, try not to take your SPF for granted, sun exposure is dangerous anytime of the year. When choosing a sunscreen for your face, check the label to make sure that it has an SPF of at least 15.

#13 Don’t forget about your ears, feet and neckline

Since these areas of skin are rarely exposed to dirt or pollution, they’re more likely to age faster than other parts of the face. Every couple of days, treat them with a gentle moisturiser.

#14 Don’t use a ton of product at once

If you’re using an anti-aging cream, it’s tempting to slather on lots of the stuff, but that can actually have the opposite effect from what you want. Instead, focus on massaging in small amounts of the skincare product slowly and evenly across your face.

#15 Don’t forget about your lips

Lip balm is one product that most women ignore — which is a shame, since your lips need some special attention on their own. If you have especially dry and chapped lips, you might want to try a richer moisturiser for that area.
