Silicones are synthetic ingredients that come in the form of oils and gels with a more or less thick texture. Silicones are used in some cosmetic products thanks to their sensory benefits and properties. Silicones are not easily biodegradable in the environment, meaning some silicones accumulate.

Silicones are relatively inexpensive ingredients that are used commonly because they are chemically inactive. In cosmetics, silicone-based ingredients act as emulsifiers in hair and skin conditioning ingredients – they help combine other substances in the cosmetic. They also act as an emollient to help soften or smooth the skin surface to give better distribution or application of the product when used. They can also help control the thickness of a cosmetic product’s formulation, help it hold or retain moisture or reduce static – found in hair care products to avoid frizzing.
